With the launch of The Dreaming Reality, our Managing Editor, Anushka Pandit profiles the authors of the book Mr. Karan Kapoor and Mr. Noor Anand. In a digital exclusive, here are the transcripts of their dialogue. Karan and Noor have been engaged working on their next project coming out soon, but had been present for the day to be available for the talk. Amidst their busy schedule, they sit down with us to talk books and life.
Anushka: Hello Noor. Hello Karan. How have you been?
Karan & Noor: Well, we’ve been great, Anushka. Hope you’re doing well.
Anushka: I am doing great too. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for letting us interview you today and for giving us a bit of your time despite your busy routine.
Karan & Noor: It’s a pleasure.
Anushka: We are privileged to have you with us here. I am already excited to get insights, so, let’s start!
Karan & Noor: Sure. We are ready.
Anushka: Your book, The Dreaming Reality, has been touching hearts. What was the source of inspiration behind writing it? Does the story of The Dreaming Reality take any parts of it from your life?
Karan: Well, we wanted to do something big—bigger than ourselves. So, we thought of making a movie. But then we realized it wasn’t possible, for we didn’t have any money. So, then the thought of writing a book crossed our minds, and stuck.
Yes, the story takes parts from our lives. I had a girlfriend who was my tuition teacher. And Noor was also in a relationship with an older girl.
Noor: Also, the reason why we stuck to writing the novel was because there was nothing that would cost: the sets were free, the actors only costed our thoughts, and we were the directors. We just needed a pen and our school diaries to begin.
Anushka: Well I’ll have to say, that’s really inspiring and impressive! And wow, writing down your own story on the pages is something really great. I’m sure it’s an amazing feeling. How did you two find each other and lock each other up for this amazing venture of writing a book together?
Karan: Well, we both were classmates. Bench mates, rather. So, we were best friends, and we felt as if we were soulmates, because we used to understand each other without even using much communication. So, our frequencies matched and we knew that we had to stick together to rise above the crowds.
Noor: A lot of writers find co-authoring difficult but had it been one of us writing the book, we wouldn’t possible have been able to finish it. The Dreaming Reality solely exists because there were two of us.
Anushka: That’s a very special bond you share and I’m sure it’s been a great journey for you two so far. I see The Dreaming Reality is an amalgam of all genres. What would you say is the reason behind this blend?
Noor: A great question, I must say. See, the reason behind this is that we felt the contemporary Indian romance authors were presenting nothing new. They had been exploiting the same basic plot since more than a decade. We’d come across many readers who’d stopped reading romance altogether. So, our basic idea was to push the genre of romance further. So, we have incorporated an engaging narration throughout the novel. Also, we researched for three months, and created a fictional disease which makes you see your future in your dreams.
Furthermore, we incorporated several other genres in the book. So, The Dreaming Reality is a thriller, a romance, , medical fiction, fused with elements from fantasy, surrealism, magic realism, and a couple of other genres as well.
Karan: Also, studying English Literature influenced us a bit. We read quite a lot of authors across centuries. So, every semester taught us something new.
Anushka: That sure must have been a big help.
Just like icing on the cake!
Karan: Yes, we have been receiving a lot of love.
Anushka: Wow. I can’t wait to read the book. It’s the next thing on my list. Yours is a really amazing blend of genres and the best form of fiction. I’m sure people love it.
Generally, what are your favorite genres? What are your favorite genres?
Karan: Well, I don’t read books by genres but authors. Though Magic Realism is my favorite, I think. For example, I like Murakami and Marquez the best. Also, currently I’m reading a lot of Bukowski, so maybe Dirty Realism, and Transgressive Fiction.
Anushka: What about you Noor?
Noor: For me it has to be classical metaphysical poetry as well as modern genres such as surrealism and magical realism. I’ve derived a lot of inspiration from these genres. Someone familiar with my writing might be able to point out the same.
Anushka: Those are some great choices! Your book gifted you the great honor of being rewarded the Ramjas prize for literature. What more do you dream for your book to achieve?
Karan: Everything that there is to achieve for a book.
Noor: I second Karan.
Anushka: Those are some very wise words, I must say.
You surely know how to pick the words!
Noor: Also, foremost, we want our book to achieve a considerably large readership.
Anushka: Every writer’s dream! I’m sure your book is wonderful enough to achieve that soon. Are your readers expecting more to read from your side? Can we have an insight to produce to our readers?
Noor: And our next work, perhaps, will be an island escape. It will have an even more expansive plot, and similarly, will traverse a lot of genres.
We have an outline nearly ready, and we’ll start working on the same in a couple of months.
Anushka: Amazing, waiting eagerly for the next star by you guys. I see you’ve been to a number of colleges and have attended reading sessions at many literary fests all across the country. What are the most common questions that you get about the plot of the story?
Noor: One question that we’re often asked is that why we chose to write a romance novel?
Also, people often ask us about the significance of the title, and the symbolism behind the cover page
Anushka: Why don’t you share with us the symbolism behind the cover page, as you must have shared earlier with your readers?
Karan: Well, we would love to. See, the title of the book—The Dreaming Reality—is clearly a paradox. So, we’re trying to depict a paradox through the cover as well. Let me illustrate, a boat is always smaller than the sea. But what if the boat is made up of the universe? The universe is definitely larger than the sea. But still it is inside the sea, here. In our novel, the universe represents the dreams, and the sea is the reality, and the protagonist’s decisions in life are more influenced by her dreams than her reality.
Anushka: That’s a very deep thought, very remarkable at the same time. It is such that it draws the reader towards it and binds him into the force which asks him to read the next pages and not stop until it’s over. How would you describe your visit to Ma’am Manju Kapur’s residence? Are there any pearls of wisdom that you took along home the day?
Noor: Well, since we come from different generations of writers, we discussed our writing habits, and shared the image that we had of an ideal reader of our works. It was incredible to find that being such a seasoned writer, she bore an extremely humble personality, and was eager to know more about our views on writing. A pearl of wisdom, if I may say, that we received from her was to write every day, whatsoever.
Anushka: That sure must have been an amazing day for you guys. How do you feel, having gained name in the literary world and amongst a large population of the youth of the country?
Noor: Well, it does feel good when we come across people in public places or public transport who recognize us and say they’ve read our book.
Karan: And we are not yet satisfied with the readership that we have as it’s not so large as it should be. We hope to reach there soon, though.
Anushka: Well sure. Your book’s bringing you a lot of love! Karan, what is one great thing about Noor that makes him a great co-author?
Karan: Noor is very hard working and he is obsessed with perfection, which makes him a great co-author!
Anushka: Allow me to shoot the same question to you for Karan.
Noor: Karan in my opinion, is, the realist pillar among us. He is great with deciding what could be the most plausible decision. Also, he is excellent with conversations, so he was the in charge of most of the great conversations we’ve shown in the novel.
Karan: Well, I am flattered!
Anushka: Karan got some really great things to hear today!
Noor: Well, he deserves to!
Anushka: What is the one thing that you would say is common between you two and makes it easy to get along?
Karan: Not to come out as narcissists, but we both are insanely creative, and we both really know how to appreciate that creativity. So that’s the best thing about us, I guess.
Noor: Also, we abide by certain basic logics which allow us to discuss, argue, and critique each other’s writings through a single vantage point. Hence, we are able to coordinate smoothly!
Anushka: Well, this has been really incredible.
I personally feel blessed to have had the chance to converse with you and get more visions about your life from close.
I want to thank you on behalf of the entire team of Ink Drift for sparing a significant lot of your time for us and our benefits.
